Short answer: JAWS is a screen reader for blind users. ZoomText and SuperNova Magnifier are screen magnifiers for people with low vision. Fusion and SuperNova Magnifier & Screen Reader combine magnification and a full screen reader in one program. Which one fits best depends mostly on the user's sight, tasks and the applications they need – not on the brand. Always try before you apply or buy.
Inva Store does not sell the programs described here. This article is an independent overview based on the manufacturers' own information and the Danish assistive technology database Hjælpemiddelbasen (November 2026).
Two manufacturers, two product families
Vispero (USA), which owns Fcaneom Scientific, makes JAWS, ZoomText and Fusion. Dolphin Computer Access (UK) makes SuperNova, Dolphin ScreenReader and GuideConnect. Both companies have been developing assistive software for Windows for more than 30 years.
| Need | Vispero | Dolphin |
|---|---|---|
| Screen magnification | ZoomText Magnifier | SuperNova Magnifier |
| Magnification with speech | ZoomText Magnifier/Reader | SuperNova Magnifier & Speech |

New in autumn 2026
JAWS, ZoomText and Fusion 2027 (November 2026)
- JAWS – Vispero Companion: one conversation that brings together the JAWS AI features: help with JAWS, Windows and Office, image descriptions, exploring complex web pages and carrying out tasks. For now a preview in the USA; other countries will follow.
- JAWS: better reading in Windows Terminal and Command Prompt and in the music notation program MuseScore.
- ZoomText – Photo Explorer: finds people, animals, food and objects in a photo and moves the magnified view from one to the next. Recognition runs on the computer and needs no internet.
- ZoomText: can now magnify protected apps and documents that block screenshots.
- Fusion: all of the above plus an AI description of the selected object in a photo (internet required).
SuperNova 25.06 (October 2026)
- Quick Action Recorder: record a sequence of keystrokes and play it back with a hotkey.
- Support for braille displays connected as USB HID.
- Improvements in Windows 11 (sign-in screen and Secure Desktop), Teams, Edge and Firefox.
- Since version 25.04 (July 2026): Face Position uses AI to tell you how you appear on camera – position and background – before Teams and Zoom meetings. Like the AI image descriptions, it requires an active SMA.
Five things to consider before choosing
1. How much sight does the user have – now and in a few years?
If the user has useful vision, a magnifier is often enough. With progressive sight loss, a program with both magnification and a full screen reader (Fusion or SuperNova Magnifier & Screen Reader) can pay off, so the user does not have to learn a new program later.
2. Which applications are used at work or school?
Both families work with Office, Teams and the common browsers. What often decides is the special systems: line-of-business software, Citrix, internal web tools. JAWS can be customised with scripts, and many IT departments know it. Always test with the actual applications the user works in.
3. Danish speech and braille
JAWS is available with a Danish interface, and the Danish Association of the Blind (Dansk Blindesamfund) has a JAWS user group. SuperNova also has a Danish interface and supports Danish 6- and 8-dot braille, both uncontracted and contracted, as well as Danish voices (Vocalizer Magnus and Sara). ZoomText has a Danish user guide. If a braille display is used, test the program with your own display.
4. AI features and data protection
New AI features describe images and help with complex pages. Some require internet, a user account or an active maintenance agreement, and images may be sent to a cloud service. That can be a problem in a workplace with confidential data – check with your IT department. ZoomText's Photo Explorer works offline.
5. Try before you apply
Both manufacturers offer trial versions. Let the user try the program in their own daily tasks, ideally with a vision consultant or IT consultant.
Free alternatives
- NVDA is a free, open-source screen reader from NV Access. It has a Danish interface, works with braille displays and is the second most used screen reader in WebAIM's survey (see below).
- Windows has a built-in Magnifier and the Narrator screen reader. They are enough for some users but have fewer options than the paid programs.
Paid programs typically offer magnification and speech in one program, more customisation and help from a Danish dealer.
How widely are they used?
In WebAIM's large survey of screen reader users (1,539 responses worldwide, December 2023 – January 2024), 40.5% used JAWS as their primary desktop screen reader, 37.7% NVDA, 9.7% VoiceOver, 3.7% SuperNova and 2.7% ZoomText or Fusion. The survey is not representative of Denmark, and people with low vision who only use magnification are rarely included.
Funding in Denmark
- Private use: the municipality under section 112 of the Social Services Act (serviceloven).
- Work: the job centre, as an aid at the workplace.
- Education: special educational support (SPS) through the place of study.
Vision consultants and caseworkers find the programs in Hjælpemiddelbasen. If the user also needs to read paper, books and letters, see our guide: How to choose a video magnifier.
Frequently asked questions
Is JAWS better than SuperNova?
Not in general. JAWS is the most widely used and highly customisable. SuperNova combines magnification and screen reader in one program, and its price in Hjælpemiddelbasen is lower. The best choice depends on the user's sight and applications.
What is the difference between ZoomText and Fusion?
ZoomText magnifies the screen, and ZoomText Magnifier/Reader also reads text aloud. Fusion is ZoomText and JAWS in one package, giving both magnification and a full screen reader.
Can NVDA be used instead of JAWS?
Yes, many people do. NVDA is free and covers most everyday tasks. In workplaces with special business systems, JAWS scripts or a dealer's support can make the difference – try both.
